A Luchador at the World Beach Handball Championships

The love for handball and beach handball brought Jorge Casillas to the Karteros Beach Sports Centre facilities, but that was not the only reason he made the long trip.

Mexico’s participation at the Women's World Championship, along with the beauties of Crete was an extra motivation for him. Casillas lives in Madrid, so the trip to Greece wasfar shorter than that of the Mexican delegation.

A handball player himself –he is registered toan amateur club in Spain –additionally loves passionatelyprofessional wrestling, an extremely popular sport in Mexico. Luchadors, as wrestlers are called in Spanish, are adored by sports aficionados and arenas are filled to capacity whenever they are on stage.

“I love handball and beach handball as well as wrestling. I play for a minor club in Madrid, I am a left-handed player”, says Casillas.

“When I saw that the Beach handball World Championship was due to take place in Crete and that Mexico was among the participating teams, I took my… mask with me, boarded on a plane and came to this amazing place”.

After the end of the IHF Beach Handball World Championships, the KarterosCentre will host a series of other international sports events including beach wrestling. Casillas and his mask will be most welcome to return and join another Cretanbeach sports party.
